Hawaii Vacation Budget Tips: Where to Splurge and Where to Save
Dreaming of Hawaii but trying to stay on budget? You’re not alone. Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime destination for many people, but it doesn’t have to come with once-in-a-lifetime sticker shock. With a few smart Hawaii vacation budget tips, you can enjoy all the beauty, fun and island charm—without overspending.
Here’s how to plan a Hawaii vacation that balances smart savings with well-placed splurges. We’ll also show you how our all-inclusive packages quietly take care of a lot of this behind the scenes, making your trip smoother from the start.
Splurge: Beachfront Hotels and Oceanfront Views
This is probably our biggest Hawaii vacation budget tip: When it comes to your hotel, location really does matter. Whether you’re dreaming of a room right on the beach or just want to be steps from the action, where you stay can set the tone for your entire trip.
All of the neighbor island resorts we use—on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island—are beachfront. On Oahu, we offer a variety of Waikiki hotels—some right on the beach, others just a block or two away—but all in prime, central locations near shopping, dining, and the ocean.
Want to Save?
Want to save without giving up the setting? Book a garden, city, or mountain view room instead of the oceanfront room category. The beach is still downstairs, and most of the amenities—like pools, restaurants and cultural classes—face the ocean anyway. You can get the beachfront location by giving up a view from your lanai, and you don’t break the bank in the process.
All-Inclusive tip: Our packages include well-located resorts like the Sheraton Waikiki (with its adults-only infinity pool and family waterslide), Royal Lahaina Resort on Maui (close to Whaler’s Village),Outrigger’s Kauai Beach Resort (perfect for exploring Kauai), and Royal Kona Resort (a fantastic base on the Big Island). Whether you’re splurging or saving on the view, you’re still in a great spot.
Save: Skip the Rental Car—But Only on Oahu
Rental cars can get pricey in Hawaii, especially with parking fees and gas. Some resorts charge upwards of $40 per day to park! But if you’re staying in Waikiki on Oahu, which we recommend, you probably won’t even need one. Waikiki is über walkable, and many popular attractions can be reached by shuttle, tour, trolley or TheBus—Oahu’s excellent public transit.
The neighbor islands are different. If you’re heading to Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island, you’ll want a car to get around and explore. For the best savings—choose a compact or economy car. It gets the job done because the views out the window are stunning no matter what you’re driving.
Want to splurge?
Go for the Jeep or convertible—it’s fun and with the top down it turns your scenic drive into a 360º adventure.
All-inclusive tip: Our Oahu packages skip the rental car, saving you money on gas and parking. On the other islands, we include a a compact or full-size rental car—depending on your package—and yes, you can upgrade if you’re in the mood to ride with the top down.
Splurge: Experiences Over Stuff
Let’s be real—you’re not flying across the Pacific to spend your vacation in stores. If you’re going to splurge, make it on experiences: a sunset dinner sail along the Na Pali coast, snorkeling Molokini Crater, visiting Pearl Harbor, an oceanfront Hawaiian luau. These are the memories that stay with you.
Want to save?
Spend a lazy day on Waikiki Beach, take a scenic drive, go for a hike, or wander around one of Hawaii’s many charming little towns. Hawaii’s natural beauty is free and endless.
All-inclusive tip: Every one of our vacation packages includes activities—already planned, scheduled, and paid for (ask about our interest-free payment plans!). You’ll usually pick from a curated list each day, with lots of flexibility to match your pace. Our all-inclusive Saver packages stick to the essentials, while our Premier packages include deluxe upgrades and extra experiences.
Save: Eat Smart Without Missing Out
Eating out in Hawaii can get pricey—but it doesn’t have to blow your budget. Look for local favorites, plate lunch spots, grab a poke bowl from a neighborhood market, or stop at a toes-in-the-sand café for something casual and scenic.
Want to Splurge?
Our all-inclusive packages include dinners at some of Hawaii’s most popular restaurants—places locals love too. These aren’t overpriced tourist traps. And since meals are prepaid, you’re not getting hit with surprise bill at the end of the night.
All-inclusive tip: Most of our packages include daily breakfast and dinner. We don’t include lunch—most people grab something light while they’re out exploring, and our breakfasts and dinners are pretty generous anyway. It’s a smart way to save without sacrificing the fun (or the food).
Save: Avoid Hidden Fees and Surprise Costs
Nothing kills vacation vibes like surprise charges. Resort fees, parking, taxes, gratuities—they can sneak up fast. But that doesn’t mean they have to catch you off guard.
All-inclusive tip: While resort fees aren’t included in our packages (they vary by hotel), we clearly list them on our website and in your booking paperwork. No surprises. We also cover a lot of costs that travelers usually forge to factor in—like park entry fees, Bellman tips, and activity admissions. Many of our meal gratuities are included too, often 20% for your server.
We also pay the state tax on rental cars—you’re only responsible for gas and a few miscellaneous fees. There are surprise presentations, no timeshare pitches, and no catch. What you see is what you get.
